If there was ever a time for mismatching, summer is it. In a season that celebrates leisure and simplicity, let your table settings do the same. This is the moment for rumpled linen, farm style flowers and general imperfection. In short, summer makes lazy look good.

I’m in love with this set up. There’s a lot going on, and it’s hard for me to settle on a star, but I think it’s the runner*, crafted simply from cheesecloth. I ordered it long enough to graze the ground when laid flat for extra drama, or bunch around centerpieces for texture.

The plateware is from my collection of basics, and was selected to mix patterns of dots and lines. The glassware follows suit with etched polka dots, bulbous rims and raised swirls. It’s all about whimsy, and playing with senses of sight and touch.

The flatware, also mismatched, is part of a recent purchase from Etsy. This particular seller will create an entirely custom vintage set– no two pieces are alike. It’s available in stainless steel and silver. I opted for stainless, as I already own silver and wanted something dishwasher-friendly!

These linen napkins are from Anthropologie, but they are so soft and pliable that they feel vintage. Simple knots are perfect for a laidback look.

Finally, flowers. I’m a firm believer in “less is more,” and bud vases are ideal for food-centric gatherings (which all of mine are). Enough to make a statement, while still leaving room for platters, candles and conversation. Here, peonies and anemones keep the seasonal vibe going. All that’s left to do is light the grill, and make a spritz. Let’s make the most of summer at home!
